Field notes · September 2026

We recommend Starlink for anyone the fiber lines forgot.

The Backroad Brief is a small independent guide to Starlink rural internet, RV satellite internet, off-grid cabins, and boats. We do not sell kits, take orders, or run the network. If the case below sounds like yours, we send you to the official Starlink website — with an affiliate link that may earn us a commission.

Our take

Fast enough for work and streaming, from almost anywhere with a clear sky.

Who it’s for

Rural homes, seasonal cabins, RVs, and boats that never got a serious wired option. If you already have cheap fiber, stay put.

Why we point people there

Low-Earth orbit cuts the lag of old satellite internet. Customers in published reviews talk about streaming, video calls, and finally staying.

What we are not

Not SpaceX. Not a storefront. Coverage, hardware, and pricing live only on the official site. Check the sky view before you buy.

On this connection

Is this Wi-Fi slower than Starlink’s typical speeds?

A short test from this device. Starlink says users typically see 25–220 Mbps down, with a majority over 100 Mbps, and 5–20 Mbps up. We don’t store the result.

Takes about fifteen seconds.

How the network works

Closer satellites, shorter wait.

Old satellite internet parks a few birds 36,000 km away. Starlink flies thousands at about 550 km, hands the connection from one to the next, and stitches the constellation together with lasers.

Where it shines

Four kinds of far away.

Service follows a clear view of the sky — not a street cabinet. House kit for a fixed roof, a Mini for the road, roam and maritime plans when you leave the driveway.

Rural homes

Where cable never showed up and DSL tops out at a crawl.

RVs and overland

Park in a secluded clearing. Set the kit down. Stay online.

Boats and coast

Coastal waters, inland lakes, and long passages with a clear sky.

Cabins and off-grid

Ridgelines, islands, and timber country—if you can see the sky.

From the record

What people say once they have it.

The first account is ours — the publisher, in Somerset — with the dish in a roof gulley. The rest are published, attributed quotes from reviewers. 89% overall satisfaction and 86% would recommend, in a CableTV.com survey.

The dish sits in a roof gulley, hidden from the ground.

“I live in a 300 year old building, far from fibre optic cable. The fastest broadband I could get was 3mbps, but with Starlink placed in a roof gulley (completely out of sight from the ground), I download at 70–200mbps. It's enough to have several high-def security cameras constantly uploading to the Internet as well as Internet TV services and all the usual computing requirements. And what's more, in the two years we've had Starlink running I think it's had no more than a couple of minutes downtime. Highly recommended.”
